Journal History
The Revista Brasileira de Família e Comunidade (www.rbmfc.org.br) is a scientific journal published by the Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina de Família e Comunidade (SBMFC), headquartered in the city of Rio de Janeiro, whose focus and scope is Family and Community Medicine (FCM) and its interface with the Primary Health Care (PHC), which is operationalized in Brazil by the Family Health Strategy (FHS).
Its mission is the placement of studies with the thematic axes focused on MFC and PHC. It is published quarterly, in the online version (ISSN 2179-7994), with free electronic dissemination and freely accessible research/studies related to clinical practice, vocational training, organisation of services as well as public health policies.
In this sense, RBMFC provides results of original research, space for debates, discussion of ideas and controversies on the FCM and the PHC. Its uniqueness lies in the fact of being the only Brazilian scientific journal dedicated to the area of Family and Community Medicine, with an international scope, as it has widespread studies in Portuguese, English and Spanish.
RBMFC had its first edition published in 1987, however, was from the implementation of the Family Health Programme in 1994 and the strengthening of the Brazilian PHC that SBMFC, in 2004, reactivated the RBMFC and since then has maintaining and improving this scientific journal. In order to improve its editorial processes the RBMFC affiliated in 2008 to the Associação Brasileira de Editores Científicos (ABEC) and in 2011, the CrossRef, pledging to follow editorial standards according to criteria established by internationally recognized bodies such as the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge.
Among the criteria already adopted by the journal include: website in English, Spanish and Portuguese; OJS platform for all editorial process; Electronic System for Journal Publishing according to ISO 19005-1: 2005 for final composition of the PDF; Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 3.0 (CC BY-NC 3.0 BR); standards with minimum criteria for submission of manuscripts; ethical requirements for research involving human beings according to the National Research Ethics Commission (CONEP); and transparency of funding sources.
From 2013 onwards RBMFC choose to publish articles only in the online version, available in PDF format on the journal's website. In addition to the mentioned criteria, the editorial board RBMFC has a master's degree (required) and PhD (desirable), bilingual, and geographical coverage in national and international territory.
