Abstract

This article challenges the hegemonic biological understanding that prevails in mental health care. It provides a constructive and critical reflection about mental health approach, which is in line with the principles of family and community medicine (FCM) and quaternary prevention (P4). This critical reflection is organised as follows: (a) a brief contextualisation of modern psychiatry; (b) challenging the definition of mental disease; (c) differences between disease-centred model and drug-centred model in mental health; and (d) drug-centred model as a tool for the practice of quaternary prevention in mental health problems (MHP). By questioning the conceptual bases of psychiatry and problematising MHP under the critical psychiatry perspective, family physicians can be better equipped to develop an individualised, contextualised, and demedicalised approach to individuals with mental distress.
