Introduction: Given the presence of women in the labor market and universities, and the consequent postponement of motherhood, the use of contraceptive methods that guarantee them autonomy, security, and freedom is essential for maintaining their increasingly prominent role in society. Studies show that the information about intrauterine devices (IUD) still does not effectively reach the population, so that the decision to use the method is still permeated by insecurity and lack of interest. Methods: This is a pilot study that used as a data collection technique the conduction of a self-designed questionnaire to 12 users of a Primary Health Care Unit in Araturi, Caucaia, Ceará, located in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza. The data collected were compared with the bibliographic survey conducted on the aspects that may interfere with women’s interest in the IUD as a contraceptive method. Results: Of the 12 women interviewed, the most used contraceptive method was condom, and none used IUDs. Although 83% of them expressed knowledge and interest in the IUD, 60% stated that they had never received explanations about the method from any health professional. Fear, lack of information, and difficulty of access were the most commonly cited barriers to choosing an IUD. Conclusions: Timely health education by health professionals has the potential to reduce the most common barriers to IUD choice and may reflect positively on ensuring women’s reproductive and sexual rights.
