The historical and social contexts of each country shape the research, services, and the quality of professional training in healthcare activities. Thus, medical specialisation is the result of these processes and the research reflects each field of interest. This essay explores three points on Family and Community Medicine (FCM) research, namely: (a) research and specific training in FCM, which questions the need to investigate the value of FCM; (b) the generalist gaze that is necessary to guide research in this area of medical knowledge; and (c) qualitative research as the most appropriate methodology for analysing this field of medical knowledge. This line of research is the one that best contributes to the investigation of the specificities of FCM and its importance for health care. Therefore, in order to navigate the complex context of primary health care (PHC), the philosophical principles of the FCM should guide both academic activities and residency programmes, as well as research initiatives in FCM.
