Abstract

Introduction: Patient expectations regarding medical care are relevant not only for improving health services but also for proper adherence to treatment. This becomes even more important in the context of chronic non-communicable diseases within an increasingly aged population. Through this understanding, patient-centered care can be enhanced. Objective: To identify the expectations of aged people with hypertension regarding medical care in Primary Health Care. Methods: This qualitative study involved open-ended interviews with aged women with hypertension. Data analysis followed the method proposed by Bardin, delineating categorical units organized into guiding themes, which allowed for the selection of the most relevant themes for discussion. Results: Eight aged women were interviewed, from whom health is central to life and often represented by the absence of problems. The role of the physician in care was highlighted as essential. The main expectations were attentive listening, physical examination, and careful patient-centered communication. Conclusions: One of the main challenges of 21st-century medicine is to understand the patient holistically. It is essential that their expectations are known, and that the physician gives them time to speak, with attentive listening and carrying out physical examinations.
