Exploring the Viva Voce
an experience report on the use of this evaluative method in family practice residency in Recife

Introduction: During the 19th century, the practice of medical education worldwide was not standardised, but scientific advances propelled the formalisation of health education, based on scientism and focused on diseases. However, this model failed to understand the social complexity of health, leading, after years, to reforms aimed at a more critical medical education. Despite the advances, it is still noticeable the difficulty in completely overcoming the gap in critical medical education, with evaluating integrated student performance being a major challenge. In this sense, Viva Voce emerges, a type of oral assessment introduced in the Family Practice Residency Program of the Recife Health Department (PRMFC Sesau Recife) in 2022. Objective: To describe the experience of implementing and conducting the Viva Voce in this residency program. Methods: The Viva Voce is a form of oral examination characterized by face-to-face interaction between the examinee and the examiners, without the involvement of patients. Within the context of the PRMFC Sesau Recife, the exam is conducted semiannually and aims to evaluate residents regarding attitudes and clinical reasoning. It is organised by creating simulated clinical cases structured in stages, with defined learning objectives. Residents are individually assessed, following a script and an evaluation form. Results: The implementation of Viva Voce provided a formative and summative evaluation, focused on the clinical reasoning and decision-making of residents. The evaluative modality is considered relevant for analysing criticality and communication skills. However, it faces challenges such as the need for examiner training and managing student anxiety. Conclusions: Viva Voce proves to be an important ally in medical education, providing an evaluation that encompasses essential aspects of health practice. Despite challenges such as student anxiety, Viva Voce contributes to diversifying the evaluative structure, essential for training quality healthcare professionals.
