This special issue of the Brazilian Journal of Family and Community Medicine (RBMFC) brings together the outcomes of an extensive process of reflection and collective knowledge-building carried out within the framework of the 9th Ibero-American Summit on Family and Community Medicine, held in Montevideo, Uruguay, between May 21 and 22, 2025. Under the motto “Family and Community Medicine: More Necessary Than Ever”, the Summit brought together leaders, experts, and representatives from across the region to discuss current and future challenges facing health systems and Primary Health Care (PHC).

The four articles published in this issue are the result of the work of international groups convened by CIMF/WONCA Iberoamericana. Their discussions and consensus-building focused on key strategic topics for the specialty: developing and sustaining the Family Medicine workforce, defining essential competencies for the twenty-first century, strengthening community responses to health emergencies, and exploring the role of technology and innovation in clinical practice.

Beyond technical reports, these papers represent a shared commitment to stronger, more equitable, and people-centred health systems. By publishing these contributions, RBMFC reaffirms its role as a platform for regional dialogue, scientific exchange, and collaborative action, helping to advance Primary Health Care and Family and Community Medicine throughout Ibero-America.
